College Old Boys arrive at the Rec

Calne send Swindon back to school

Calne Rugby took on Swindon College Old Boys 2XV at the Rec looking to continue their impressive start to the season.

From the kickoff Swindon attacked with purpose and were rewarded with a penalty to take a 0-3 lead. During the early exchanges both packs battled to get the upper hand but it was Calne’s pack that would quickly establish the upper hand.

After a powerful run by Chris McAlonan, Calne were awarded a penalty which was slotted between the uprights to make it 3-3.

The match was highly competitive, and Swindon worked hard to break through a very resolute home defence but it was Calne who would score next after some good work from Chris Addinell and Adam Young who broke through to make it 10-3.

Calne’s front row consisting of Hooker Dave Evans, Shane McCafferty and captain Tom Morten continued scrummage well and secure good line out ball. Scrum half Daniel Treacy put in a fantastic performance both in attack and defence.

Throughout the first half Calne played some great rugby, Liam Kearney made a great interception from half way to charge towards the line before setting up Daniel Treacy to score and convert to make it 17-3.

From the restart SCOB were quickly on the attacked as they continued to use their big forward to good affect. After some good forward play their centre broke through to score to set up an interesting second half. 17-10

In the 2nd Calne put the pressure on and were dominating the scrums which allowed (number 8) Alan Wicks to control the ball at the back to the scrum to dive over the line. However, the referee was not in a position to see the ball grounded. However, Wicks wouldn’t have to wait long for another opportunity Calne were awarded a scrum 5 metres from the Swindon Line. Calne’s pack marched over the line and Wicks dived over to make it 24-10

SCOB continued to battle hard looking for a response and were rewarded after another good break to make it 24-15.

Calne made a few substitutions which saw Pete Brownlie come into front row and Keith Bradley at flank. With Treacy having to leave the field through injury Chris McAlonan stepped in at 10 and the team reshuffled. But it was the home side who would spend the remaining 15-20 mins in their opponent’s half as the clock ticked down.

During the closing stages of the game Calne continued to have the upper hand at the breakdown and Marcus Turner, Adam Young and Dan Oakford continued to cause the Swindon defence issues.

After another break from Young it was Liam Kearney would have the final say as he crossed the line to cap a man of the match performance. The final whistle sounded, and the game ended 31-15.
